usually when i entertain i have a good idea about what i'm going to be making a fair amount of time before i make it. however an impromtu dinner party coupled with a week long business trip threw me for a bit of a loop. waking up early on saturday morning, i had no groceries in the fridge and no idea what i was making for dinner for five. luckily i have a few easy recipes in my arsenal and i supplemented a bit with some recipes from martha stewart's newest and thomas keller's bouchon. mmmm... dinner in no time! too bad that when i get excited i forget to take pictures. =p

bouchon house vinaigrette
1/4 cup dijon mustard
1/2 cup red wine vinegar
1 1/2 cups canola oil
whisk mustard and vinegar. slowly drizzle in canola oil and whisk together briskly. add a pinch of salt to taste.
i used it over a wedge salad with iceberg, toasted almonds, tomatoes, and avocado.
