in a recent search to find a tasty restaurant in alhambra i stumbled across this website and his description of indonesian food.

hahaha... i think i want to try it now. according to mapquest, alhambra is about half an hour from where i'm staying for work. i can check out nucleus AND have indonesian food!

ruth asawa

i've always liked ruth asawa's work but haven't really had a chance to see too much of it. it seems that i will randomly come across some of her pieces and then remember... oh yeah! ruth asawa is pretty cool. from afar i am always reminded of trees, twigs, and things from nature, but upon closer inspection, the sculptures are made up of twisted wire. very interesting. most prominent in my mind is the piece of hers that hangs on the outside of the oakland museum. the other day i was treated to a free trip to the newly remodeled deyoung museum and i came across a few more of her pieces! i took a few pictures and it turns out that all of them are blurry. but since i am still trapped in my ie hotel room i thought i would take advantage of my internet access and share them with you.

I haven't been working on any crafts lately, but I am hoping to get to this quilt over spring break. Here are some of the fabrics that I'm going to use. I hadn't noticed before looking at the picture that one of the blue prints is more or less a brighter, slightly smaller scale version of the other. It just goes to show that I like patterns that look like trees, I guess. I'm uncertain about the mottled navy print. We'll see what other fabrics I pick up to match with them.

To the far right, you can admire a sliver of my institutional-style carpeting.

P.S. When I bought these fabrics, I thought mixing the blue, lavender and purple was new for me, but I just noticed how it matches the blog color scheme. Ha! I guess I'm stuck in a color rut.

stuck in socal

work has stranded me in a place that they call the inland empire. it appears to be the land of endless malls and chain restaurants. one of the people i met out here actually described it as the armpit of california. and he lives here! go figure.

i've been taking in the scenery for the past few weeks and there are a few interesting tidbits to report. out here the cell phone towers disguised as trees are much more tree like than the ones up in northern california. they even have palm tree cell phone towers! it seems to me that the cell phone towers around my house are all painted a shade of green not found in nature. i wonder why that is?

the other interesting thing in "the ie" (as i heard the local radio station refer to it) was a brief visit to lake arrowhead. we were unable to find the public access portion of the lake but wandered around briefly on the rows of private docks. man it was cold! but very scenic.

Angry Chicken's post on sock animals had me giggling. Sock elephants! Sock pigs! They're adorable.

grocery outlet

when i moved into my new digs, one of the things that i really liked about my new location was its proximity to grocery stores. within walking distance is a grocery outlet and in about a year or so there will also be a whole foods! grocery stores are one of the few places where i feel like i can spend money without feeling horribly guilty. i equate the grocery outlet with thrift store shopping in my head. you never know what you're going to find... sometimes there are some awesome buys and sometimes you come away completely empty handed. however, there are some problems associated with my grocery outlet shopping. one of these problems is that i tend to buy things because they are interesting. interesting when it comes to food does not necessarily equate with edible. another problem is that sometimes these really good bargins come in very large packages. who really NEEDS a 46 oz jar of philippine brand mango preserves? hahaha... apparently i do because i now have a jar of it sitting in my pantry. any suggestions for recipes? i'm not really a toast and jam kind of gal...

potential scandal

I finally cast on for the back piece of this top and managed to pin the front onto the dress form. I'm a little concerned about its potential scandalousness. I put a bra on the dressform under the top to see how much of it would show through and that didn't really help matters. Even though the form is adjustable, I think it still has a larger cup size than me and adding the bra just increased that particular difference. At this point, I'm just going to have to deal with the potential scandalousness because there is no way I'm going to reknit the front.

sweets + cuteness

Super Eggplant has a post with pictures of adorable Japanese sweets. I guess it's all about dessert and malt liquor over here lately. Should I photograph my Schlitz salt and pepper shakers?

I've heard that lf's coworker likes to send her pictures of adoptable pets, in an attempt to coerce her into getting a dog. I will send her pictures of adorable bunnies, so maybe she'll get one that looks like a tiny ball of fluff.
