Arrange your books by color instead (link semi-shamelessly ripped off from yummyyarn).
I am somewhat inspired to do this with my own books, since I think the results are oddly beautiful. Currently, my books are arranged sort of thematically, but that will all go down the tubes soon, when the shelf becomes overpopulated. Strangely, I also can remember the color and cover design of the books I've read. I guess that doesn't necessarily mean that I remember what color the spine is. All of you who know me are laughing at the thought that I have any organization method, but it's there, really!

Senior year, I tried to organize my moisturizers, body washes, shampoos, perfumes, etc. by color. While it lasted, it was pretty, except it lacked certain colors (I don't think there was very much orange or yellow, for example). Of course that was back when I could devote a huge shelf to just beauty products... Hmm, I think color blocks of products are why I'm so attracted to Target and Bath & Body Works. But that's another topic altogether.
