rollercoaster

Things have been a little off over in this corner of the world. I'm not sure if it is excessive work or not doing any of the excessive work, but it's like the angle is tilted just slightly so that things seem weird, but I can't figure out what they are.

Lf emailed about She Who Eats and I checked out the website. I want to make macarons, but they seem a little to intense for me right now. I'm also not sure if the egg whites that I have had sitting around have gotten stale... do they have a shelf life that starts post-cracking and separating from the yolks? I felt lazy and didn't want to cook at all today. I had chicken korma leftovers for breakfast... what does that tell you? I didn't feel like making rice, since it might burn and then I would have to scrub out the pot again, so I made nabe.

I threw in some enoki, imitation crab cylinders (why that shape and I wonder if they are qualitatively different from the fake crab chunks), carrots, green onions, leftover ganmodoki, shiitake and chicken broth. I liked the first bowl, except I don't think imitation crab is something that's supposed to simmer. It started to disentegrate into imitation crab goo. By the second bowl, I was slightly grossed out.

I just tasted a bit of the lemon cake. Since it was the first slice, I got a bit of the extra-toasty, charcoaly crust. Not delicious. After I cut off that part, the inside tasted good. There was a hint of almond from the extract, a slightly nutty texture from the ground almonds and a lot of tartness from the lemon juice. Yay lemon juice slathering. I need to invest in a pastry brush.
