quilting, no stippling or tippling

Here's the "standing on the table and leaning off to try to get an overhead shot of the quilt top" photo. Surrounded by quarter circles and star shapes after midnight and talking to myself about how to arrange the blocks, I started to feel like some sort of schizophrenic/savant quilter. It was originally fairly random, but I felt like that made the colors look washed out (this photo doesn't help that impression). I ended up piecing it together in a less random manner, but think that it was better the first way. Oops.

Yesterday I had to take a trip to the fabric store to get a little something for a border on the quilt. Even though I had totally over-bought as far as yardage for the quilt, nothing I had in large enough amounts were just right for what I wanted and I hadn't planned on making a border in the first place. I managed to slap on the border last night, out of this lavender/pink solid (so much for minimizing the girliness of the quilt) and then was going to use a pink batik for the backing, but it didn't end up being enough fabric either. Argh! I pieced the back last night without any clear plan and hoping that I had absorbed some compositional genius by being in the same room with some Gee's Bend quilts. Now I'm in the process of machine quilting, which is not exactly my favorite part of the whole thing, but I've found that just quilting circles is way easier than stipple quilting and doesn't make my wrists as sore. Whew.
